A large weakness in society today is the unequal pay. According to barackobama.com, for every $1.00 earned by a man, the average woman receives only 77 cents, while African American women only get 67 cents and Latinas receive only 57 cents. Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? The sad truth is that people are still being paid less based on their gender and/or race. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act is an unenacted bill, which would protect women and racial minorities from pay discrimination. It needs to become a law.
Everybody is negatively affected by unequal pay. A single mother that can’t afford the basic necessities for her children because she gets paid less than her male coworkers will have to apply for welfare, which comes out of taxpayers’ money. If she had equal pay, she might not have had to apply for welfare, and the money could go to help repairing our economy. It could also worsen a struggling family’s situation if they are a racial minority. Nobody should be financially disadvantaged based on gender or race, and the government should not allow this to happen.
The Declaration of Independence contains the phrase “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” The saying may only say “men,” but it is not limited to Caucasian males. Everybody is born with
these rights, and being paid fairly is definitely a part of happiness. It is un-American to discriminate based on gender or race, and is also illegal. But this is still allowed to happen.
The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act should be a law, and those who are found guilty of unequal pay for the same job should be sent to prison. This is a great weakness in today’s American society, and there is no excuse for it. Nobody should be disadvantaged for something that they can’t help. Neither gender nor race is a handicapped. So why are people still being paid less because of it?

The week after next AND the week after that, I'm babysitting a 10 year old at the camp I volunteer at on the weekdays. Her mother is paying me $75 a week, so I will be paid a grand total of $150.

Now, the predicament.

I can either buy:

• mp3 player - $56.99
• What's Your Medium (The Medic Droid) - $9.98
• The Black Parade is Dead! (My Chemical Romance) - $17.99
• If (Mindless Self Indulgence) - $21.99
• Juno - $15.87
• Gutter Phenomenon (Every Time I Die) - $14.99
total: $137.81

OR

I can buy Rock Band for $149.96 (I can get tax money from my bank account)

I need a new mp3 player since mine is out of space, but I can always get one for Christmas. I also really want the CDs and DVDs, and I can't ask for them all for Christmas. Or, ya know, I can always use Limewire and watch-movies.com.

I've always wanted Rock Band, and I can only play it when I visit my friend. My brother has an XBox 360, but he uses it a lot, so I won't have a lot of time for it.
